As you know, the Furrow Euro races have been the primary fundraiser for El Paso-Gridley Cross Country teams for more than a decade. Here’s an update from Coach Melick on the team’s 2016 season:
The EPGXC Titans have been grinding workouts and logging miles since practice started on August 11, and as the weather changes they are in prime shape to shift gears into big meet season. Coming up are the unofficial Heart of Illinois Conference meet at Eureka on October 15; IHSA Regional at Farmington on October 22; IHSA Sectional at Elmwood on October 29; and the IHSA Class A State Championship on November 5.
The Titan roster has expanded to thirty members this season, with half of them being freshmen. Twenty-five have already ran their lifetime best for three miles and the other five are within striking distance. Some highlights this season include the Fresh-Soph boys dominance- winning FS Championships at both Bureau Valley and Elmwood Invitationals; the girls won the Fred Guyot Comeback Award for dropping the most team places at the prestigious St. Joe Ogden Spartan Classic; and both teams have been ranked among the top 25 in the State this year.
At the junior high level, the Titans have a pair of teams that are looking to repeat history. In 2015, both the boys and girls teams advanced to the IESA State Finals, and the Titans are in great shape to repeat that fantastic performance in 2016. Both squads have already set school records for fastest team in EPG history, calculated by adding the times from the top five runners. They are in their taper week as the IESA Sectional at Germantown Hills is this Saturday, October 8. Go Titans!
